Resistance training, especially as you age, will lead you to a much more longevous life.
Last week I shared The Core 3 Tenets:
Today we’ll go deeper into Tenet #1: Be Strong. As it is extremely important.
The importance of being strong can be summed up pretty concisely with two of my favorite quotes:
“Strong people are harder to kill”
and
“Doing hard shit makes everything else easier”
To be honest, I never trained for strength specifically until part way thru the pandemic.
Yet, being a New Dad and having those 1-hr time limits at the gym meant I needed to be focused.
So I decided the “meat and potatoes” of my workouts would be strength training.
I recently turned 37, I’m stronger than I ever have been, leaner, fitter and still able to hammer out 8+ treatments in a day, with minimal fuss and no signs of slowing down.
I know you’re probably thinking…
“How does this apply to me? I’m not a massage therapist. I sit at a desk all day.”
That’s where my second quote comes in:
“Doing hard shit makes everything else easier”
When you’re focusing on training for strength, your connective tissue becomes more resilient and durable, so you get less aches.
When you are strong, your muscles resist gravity easier, therefore you’re not slipping into the poor posture habits that can cause some of those aches and pains from just doing something for 8+ hours straight.
Another great feature has to do with the idea of “comfort creep”.
Comfort creep explains how our bodies are constantly looking for stressors and the next thing that is trying to kill us.
When there aren't any major threats around (like tigers and wolves)…
We create things to be stressed about and the more comfortable our life becomes.
So… basically, if we stress the body enough with strength training.
(Like trying to convince it that it’ll be crushed by 200 pounds fairly often)
That becomes the biggest stressor in your life.
So your boss barking at you about a deadline doesn’t seem like a threat anymore.
Make sense?
Anyways, I could go on all day about the general benefits of training for strength like anti-aging, keeping your independence, de-stressing and increasing confidence…
But I wanted to focus on the main ones that relate to you.
